Our Approach to Behaviour
At Stanley School, we understand that behaviour is communication. For our pupils with complex needs, many are non-verbal, behaviour is often the primary way they express their feelings, needs and responses to the world around them.
We don't just manage behaviour – we work proactively to understand what each child is communicating and create an environment where they feel safe, understood and able to thrive.
Our Core Principles
Every behaviour tells a story
We see all behaviour as meaningful communication. Our job is to understand what each child is trying to tell us and respond with compassion and skill.
Prevention is better than intervention
We focus on creating the right environment, routines and support to prevent distress and challenging behaviour before it occurs.
Individualised, person-centred support
Every child is unique. We tailor our approach to each pupil's specific needs, preferences, communication style and sensory profile.
Positive relationships are the foundation
Our pupils need to feel safe and connected. We build trusting relationships through consistency, patience and genuine care.
We work as a team
Positive behaviour support involves everyone – staff, families, other professionals and the pupils themselves. We're all working together.
We will regularly:
- Review individual positive support plans
- Analyse behaviour data to identify patterns
- Update risk assessments
- Provide ongoing Team Teach training and refreshers
- Access specialist support and advice
- Learn from incidents to improve our practice
- Seek feedback from families
We monitor:
- The effectiveness of individual support strategies
- Use of physical intervention (frequency, duration, effectiveness)
- Staff training needs
- Environmental factors that may affect behaviour
- Pupil wellbeing and quality of life
