Butterflies
Welcome to Butterfly Class – our Semi-Formal class for children aged 6 to 7 years. We are a busy, active learning environment where every child is supported to grow in confidence, independence and understanding.
Our Team
Class Teacher: Becky
Support Staff: Tina, Hannah and Emmie
We work together as a team of four to ensure every child receives the support and encouragement they need throughout the school day.
Our class goals for the year are ambitious and exciting! We're focusing on:
- Developing attention and engagement – helping children stay focused and involved in their learning
- Building joint play skills – learning to play and interact with others
- Using verbal communication – making requests and telling us what they can see
- Developing understanding within Blanks levels 1 and 2 – building strong language comprehension
- Early phonological awareness and comprehension skills – the building blocks for reading
- Early maths skills – exploring numbers, counting and mathematical concepts
- Following simple routines with reduced support – growing in independence
- Executive functioning skills – planning, organising and problem-solving
- Self-help and independence skills – doing more for themselves each day
- Following clear and simple class rules – understanding what's expected of them
Some favourite activities throughout the week are swimming, crafts and Forest School. The children in Butterfly Class thrive when learning is hands-on, practical and engaging!
We use a thematic approach to learning, which means we explore topics in depth across different subjects. Our teaching is child-centred, following the children's interests and needs. We believe in repetition of skills with variation in context – practising the same skills in different ways helps embed learning. All our tasks are hands-on, visual and highly practical, making learning come alive. We ensure activities are achievable but suitably challenging, so every child experiences success whilst being stretched.
This year we have an exciting range of topics including:
My Senses Adventure Focus: Communicating preferences – helping children express what they like and don't like through exploring their senses
Celebrations of Light Focus: Developing awareness of cultural winter traditions, exploring light and dark, freezing and melting – discovering the science and traditions of winter
In Butterfly Class, we work closely with parents to ensure consistency between school and home. The children in Butterfly Class select a book to take home each week to support reading for pleasure. We want to nurture a love of stories and books! Children who want to access the Bug Club reading scheme and games at home are given an individual login for access to books, games and comprehension questions based on their reading level. This means learning can continue at home in a fun and engaging way.
