Hedgehogs

Welcome to Hedgehogs Class! We are a mixed-age group of wonderful learners, and we follow an informal pathway of learning. This pathway supports children with significant learning needs through sensory exploration, play-based activities and lots of fun, hands-on experiences.

We work together as a team to ensure every child receives the support and encouragement they need throughout the school day.

In Hedgehogs, our classroom is a happy, calm and welcoming place where every child is supported to feel safe, valued and ready to learn. We pride ourselves on building strong, trusting relationships with our children and families and creating lots of special memories along the way.

A key focus in Hedgehogs is developing independence and life skills. Through activities such as cookery, preparing breakfast and shopping in our local community, we give our children opportunities to develop important skills for everyday life and prepare for their future.

We support communication through a total communication approach, using simple language, symbols and personalised strategies. We also help children understand and manage their emotions through calm routines and individual sensory strategies.

Our children love learning through hands-on, sensory experiences. Favourite activities include Bucket Therapy, sensory massage, sensory stories, cookery and lots of creative activities — especially painting!

Throughout the year, we explore exciting topics including: All About Me, Winter Wonderland, Transport, Circus, Mini Beasts and Tropical Jungle. Each topic provides opportunities to explore, communicate, make choices and learn through play and sensory experiences.

We have wonderful relationships with our parents and carers and use ClassDojo to share the children’s achievements, experiences and special moments from their day.

Above all, we want every child in Hedgehogs to feel happy, confident, included and proud of themselves as they learn, grow and make memories together.
