Owls

Welcome to Owls Class – our Semi-Formal class for children aged 6 to 8 years. We are a busy, active learning environment where every child is supported to grow in confidence, independence and understanding.

Our Team

Class Teacher: Keane

Support Staff: Ania, Caroline and Emmie

We work together as a team of four to ensure every child receives the support and encouragement they need throughout the school day.

Our class goals for the year are to continue to become comfortable around school as we enter our 2nd or 3rd year at Stanley School. We also want to help our children to build progression in their understanding of numbers as well as learning the meaning behind the words they are beginning to read. We also know how important it is for children to be regulated before being ready to learn. I want to help the children explore different ways to regulate and help them build independence and confidence to achieve this independently.

Some favourite activities throughout the week are swimming, Maths and learning out in the community. The children in Owls Class thrive in a busy environment, so we will often split most of our lessons up into four stations. One is a work-based approach with a form of written task; one will be a messy and exploratory activity. Another will be a personalised activity that will follow the main aspect of the lesson but use toys or favourite objects to draw stronger attention to the lesson and the final station is an active and sensory circuit-style activity to keep them alert and ready to learn.

This year we have a large range of topics to learn about. We are starting with feelings and families. This helps the children settle into the routine after a lovely summer break. We look at different events across the year, like Halloween, Bonfire night, Christmas, Valentines and Easter. We explore our imagination and promote curiosity with topics like Animals, Space, Robots and Transport. Independent living skills are really important within my class, which will be continuous throughout the year.

In Owls class, we work closely with the parents to ensure that there is a match in routine in school and at home. Daily messages between staff and parents can help communicate how the children are feeling and will help ease that transition into school in the morning as we know how we can best help the children as they enter the room, as well as us letting you know how your child is coming home. Daily class stories are posted with pictures of all the fun we have had with some details of the lessons and activities that the children have completed. This is so important to us as we want you to still know all about their amazing day even if they are not able to tell you themselves.
