Equality Information

At Stanley School, we celebrate diversity and ensure every member of our community is valued, respected and treated fairly.

We recognise and celebrate the varied cultural and religious backgrounds of our school community. We provide a friendly, warm, welcoming school where families, school staff and other professionals work together for the benefit of the children.

Under the Equality Act 2010, we must not unlawfully discriminate against pupils or staff because of their sex, race, disability, religion or belief, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, or sexual orientation.

Our Legal Duties

As a state-funded school, we have a legal duty to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
  • Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
Our Equality Statement

The Governors and staff of Stanley School are committed to the principle and practice of equality of opportunity. We aim for every pupil to fulfil their potential no matter what their background or personal circumstances.

We aim to:

  • Provide a secure and accessible environment in which all our children can flourish and in which all contributions are considered and valued
  • Include and value the contribution of all families to our understanding of equality and diversity
  • Provide positive non-stereotyping information about gender roles, diverse ethnic and cultural groups and people with disabilities
  • Due to the very purpose and nature of Stanley School, we pride ourselves in being very inclusive and will endeavour to support every child regardless of their individual needs

All pupils follow an adapted curriculum appropriate to their level of need and at a pace that is appropriate for them.

We have an inclusive ethos which means all staff, pupils and parents work together to ensure that everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, disability or social background can thrive.

How We Promote Equality

In our curriculum:

  • We promote tolerance, friendship and understanding of a range of religions and cultures through different aspects of our curriculum. This includes teaching in PSED and RE, but also activities in other curriculum areas. For example, as part of teaching and learning in English/reading, pupils will be introduced to literature from a range of cultures
  • Where possible, through our PSHE, RE and other relevant and meaningful curriculum experiences, we ensure our pupils consider and value diversity and celebrate different cultural inheritances

In our school community:

  • We hold assemblies dealing with relevant issues for our school community. Pupils are encouraged to participate in assemblies and we also invite external speakers to contribute where appropriate
  • We work with and are active within our local community
  • Our school council has representatives from different age groups across our school - pupil voice is gathered from our pupils across our school

Pupils are taught to respect and celebrate differences and understand that everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexuality or disability has equal value. Staff model respect and understanding in all their dealings within school. Inclusion and care for others are part of our core values.

Tackling Discrimination

We take all forms of discrimination, harassment and bullying seriously.

Report concerns to any member of staff or the Head teacher.

We will not tolerate racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, disability-based or any other form of prejudice-based behaviour.
