Squirrels

Welcome to Squirrels Class – our Informal pathway class for children aged 5 to 7 years. We are a calm, low arousal environment with plenty of opportunities for mutual regulation where every child is supported to build strong relationships and develop at their own pace.

Our Team

Class Teacher: Hannah/Evie

Support Staff: Chloe, Sarah and Liv

We work together as a team to ensure every child receives the support and encouragement they need throughout the school day.

Our main priority this year is settling our new pupils into the school, building strong/positive relationships with both peers and familiar adults. Familiarising ourselves with class routines, school environment and new learning opportunities. Our class's core areas of learning are communication and language, social/play skills and regulation.

The children in Squirrels class love their weekly swimming session in the hydro pool. So that the children get the most out of the space in the pool, we split them into 2 groups. We use our Bluetooth light speaker in the pool area, so the environment is relaxing and calming for the swim session. Our children also really enjoy their daily bucket session every afternoon, and we are currently working on stage 3, building on their attention and turn-taking skills.

Another favourite part of their week is our cookery session on Fridays. Working on our independent living skills, communication, fine and gross motor skills. We always create an edible item linking to our weekly topic.

Squirrels class work best in a calm, low arousal environment with plenty of opportunities for mutual regulation.

So far, this year Squirrels class have covered topics such as Me, Myself and I, Seasonal Changes, Celebrations and Festivals, Winter and currently our theme week is "Always Winter, Never Christmas." Our next topics are Muddy Puddles, New Life, Easter and Sail Away.

We have a very open dialogue between home and school through the use of daily Dojo stories, so all parents are aware of what their children have done during the day. Particular achievements are shared privately and targets we are currently working on are shared regularly.
