Woodpeckers
Welcome to Woodpeckers Class – our Informal class for children aged 5 to 7 years. We are a nurturing, sensory-rich learning environment where every child is supported to develop at their own pace and discover the world around them.
Our Team
Class Teacher: Colin
Support Staff: Donna and Angela
We work together as a team of three to ensure every child receives the individualised support and care they need throughout the school day.
Our main goal is to develop skills for our learning as we progress through school. We want every child to feel confident and ready to learn.
We're also focusing on:
- Improving our knowledge of symbols – helping children understand and use symbols to communicate and make sense of their world
- Increasing the language we use – building communication skills so children can express themselves more effectively
A key priority for us this year is developing skills for our regulation to help us be ready to learn. We know that when children feel calm and regulated, they're able to engage more fully with their learning.
Our favourite activities are swimming and cookery – activities that engage all the senses and bring learning to life!
The children in Woodpeckers Class learn best by immersing ourselves in sensory play. We explore textures, sounds, smells and movements to help us understand and engage with the world. We also use symbols to support us in our learning and communication, helping us to make choices, follow routines and express ourselves.
This year we have exciting topics to explore:
- Our Homes and Family – learning about the important people and places in our lives
- New Life and Farm Animals – discovering baby animals and life on the farm
- Sea Creatures – exploring the fascinating world under the sea
Throughout all our topics, our main focus is developing skills for our regulation to help us be ready to learn. We want every child to feel calm, safe and ready to engage with the exciting learning opportunities we provide.
In Woodpeckers Class, we work closely with parents to ensure consistency and support between school and home.
Symbols for home: We support our parents by creating symbols to use at home. This helps children understand routines, make choices and communicate across both settings, building their confidence and independence.
Daily communication: We also communicate daily using Class Dojo, so you can stay connected with what's happening in class each day. We share updates, photos and celebrate your child's achievements, and we always love hearing about what they've been up to at home too!
