Bug Club Phonics
At Stanley School, we use Bug Club Phonics as our core systematic synthetic phonics programme, combined with multisensory approaches to help all our learners develop early reading skills.
What is Bug Club Phonics?
Bug Club Phonics is a comprehensive, structured phonics programme published by Pearson. It provides a systematic approach to teaching reading through engaging stories and activities featuring colourful bug characters that capture pupils' interest and imagination.
The programme includes:
- Decodable reading books carefully matched to each phase of phonics learning.
- Interactive digital resources that pupils can access on tablets and computers
- Home learning materials to support families in reinforcing phonics at home
Building from the Foundations
We start with Phase 1 phonics, focusing on environmental sounds, rhythm and rhyme, and listening skills. Pupils learn to distinguish between different sounds in their environment, play with instruments and body percussion, explore songs and rhymes, and develop their oral blending skills. This prepares them for learning letter sounds by developing their attention and ability to discriminate between different sounds.
As pupils progress through Phases 2-6, Bug Club Phonics provides a clear, systematic sequence. In Phase 2, pupils learn single letter sounds and begin blending simple words. Phase 3 introduces digraphs (two letters making one sound) like 'sh' and 'ch'. Phases 4 and 5 build on this with more complex spelling patterns and alternative pronunciations. By Phase 6, pupils are confident readers who can tackle different spellings and read with increasing fluency.
The Bug Club characters accompany pupils throughout their journey, making phonics learning engaging and memorable. Each phase has carefully levelled books that allow pupils to practise the specific sounds they've learnt in context, building confidence and fluency.
Making Phonics Multisensory
Our pupils learn best when they can experience phonics through multiple senses. We combine Bug Club Phonics with additional multisensory approaches, including visual supports like symbols and colour coding, tactile activities such as letter formation in sand and playdough, songs and chants for auditory reinforcement, and whole-body actions for sounds.
The Bug Club digital platform enhances this multisensory approach with interactive games, animations, and activities that respond to pupils' choices. Pupils can hear sounds modelled clearly, see letters formed correctly, and engage with phonics in a dynamic, responsive way.
Personalised for Every Learner
Every pupil's phonics journey is individualised based on their current communication level, sensory preferences, pathway (Pre-Formal, Informal, Semi-Formal, or Formal), and rate of progress. Some pupils may spend longer on Phase 1 activities, while others progress more quickly through the phases. Bug Club Phonics allows us to match pupils precisely to the right level of challenge.
We teach phonics regularly through dedicated Bug Club Phonics lessons, using Bug Club books, continuous provision activities that reinforce learning, and opportunities across the curriculum to apply phonics skills.
Assessment and Progress
Bug Club Phonics includes built-in assessment tools that help us track each pupil's progress through the phases. We regularly assess pupils' phonics knowledge through ongoing observation, phase-appropriate assessments using Bug Club materials, and monitoring of their reading accuracy and fluency. We celebrate every small step of progress, whether that's recognising a new sound, blending their first word, or reading a complete Bug Club book independently.
Our approach ensures that every pupil can access high-quality, engaging phonics teaching that supports their journey towards becoming confident, fluent readers.
